Today, the Cabinet Secretary for Tourism and Wildlife, Ms. Rebecca Miano, visited the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) Law Enforcement Academy (LEA) in Tsavo West National Park for a familiarization visit.
Established in 1990, the LEA is mandated to provide paramilitary training and upskilling courses to KWS uniformed staff and other wildlife stakeholders.
Since its inception, the academy has trained over 17,000 law enforcement personnel dedicated to wildlife conservation and management.
It has evolved from a modest training school into a centre of excellence in wildlife law enforcement, playing a crucial role in shaping the future of wildlife conservation and management in Kenya and globally.
During her visit, the Cabinet Secretary inspected the training facilities and familiarized herself with the training process for ranger recruits. Currently, KWS has a cohort of recruits undergoing a six-month paramilitary training program. The last recruitment was conducted in 2014, and through the support of the government, KWS has been able to recruit the Kenyan youth as rangers.
Upon successful completion of the course, they will be deployed to various conservation areas to enhance field command, operations, wildlife protection, management of human-wildlife conflict, security for wildlife, and tourism management in their respective.
These recruits will become the custodians of Kenya’s wildlife heritage, and their work will directly contribute to the prosperity of the nation.
