The Eastern Africa Power Pool’s Steering Committee and Council of Ministers led by cabinet secretary for Energy and Petroleum Davis Chirchir joined other member states and key partners like the World Bank, ADB, and USAID/Power Africa to actively foster regional cooperation in the energy sector.
Speaking during the 18th Council of Ministers meeting in Nairobi , Cs Davis Chirchir acknowledged that With a combined installed capacity of 90.6GW, these nations aim to meet a growing 6% annual demand by engaging in cross-border trade. Discussions emphasized reinforcing the organizational structure of the EAFF, enhancing coordination and fortifying the EAPP’s capacity to tackle emerging challenges.
Kenya showcased the benefits of energy from Ethiopia and engaging in energy exchange with Uganda. Projects like the Kenya-Tanzania inter-connector and lines connecting Egypt, Libya, Sudan, Djibouti, Ethiopia, and Uganda-Rwanda are advancing.
In a pivotal move, discussions unfolded regarding the admission of Independent Power Producers and Independent Transmission Developers into the East African Power Pool, recognizing their substantial market share. Ongoing talks will provide updates in the coming months.
The discussions held were key in strengthening the organizational structure of the EAPP with a view of enhancing coordination, streamlining decision-making processes, and fortifying the EAPP’s capacity to address emerging challenges.
The representatives from the member countries and utilities in the Eastern Africa region actively participated in the meetings, reflecting a shared commitment to advancing regional cooperation in the energy sector.
