EACC to recover Kes.4M public funds embezzled in World War One Event in Taita Taveta

After long awaited response , Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission has finally responded to graft allegations concerns raised by the public in Taita Taveta for the past one year.


In its 4th Quarterly Report published on Friday, 2 . EACC announced through its X official account the completion of investigation on two graft cases involving Taita Taveta ; One involving 2 out of the 24 files recommending prosecution of suspects relate to the County Government of Taita Taveta where the County Assembly leadership and MCAs defrauded the taxpayer by undertaking a bonding and merry-making trip to Zanzibar on public funds amounting to over Kes.7M. Some MCAs were overpaid while others who received allowances for the journey did not travel.

Second case involving four Senior County Executive Officials embezzled over Kes.4M in purported celebrations for World War I.

A total of Ksh.4,050,560 was released by Taita Taveta County government to facilitate the annual Annual World War One 3 days event that was held from 24th- 27th November 2022.


Leaked receipts and invoices allegedly forged by the county government of Taita Taveta shared to Prime Africa indicates that hotels and service providers like ; gracious sounds , Maghonyi Guest Hotels Ltd , Voi Wildlife Lodge were paid for their services.


However the a section of service providers confess not receiving payment and never offered any services to Taita Taveta County government. EACC responded on the allegations immediately after the county government of Taita Taveta announced the suspension of four senior staff through a press release dated 6th April 2023 .

The four suspects were later reinstated to their position in official capacity despite being summoned by the county assembly of Taita Taveta on the same matter .

Besides the prosecution of suspects, EACC will pursue recovery of the lost funds.
