It was a joyful moment for the vulnerable families in Voi, Taita Taveta County after receiving significant donations as a new year gift from Governor Andrew Mwadime on Sunday morning.
A team from the governor’s office delivered a consignment of assorted foodstuff and other basic items to enable the vulnerable families to celebrate the New Year’s festive season alongside other citizens in the County.
Leading the distribution of the new year gift pack to 2000 vulnerable households in the county, the governor’s political advisor Richard Lukindo stated that aid comes in handy to support the less fortunate including the aged people as well as those living with different forms of disabilities and health challenges.
There are a lot of challenges that our people are going through especially with the rising cost of living and that is why Governor Mwadime decided to share with his people so that they can also feel as part of the community
Said Lukindo
Earlier on, the governor had donated food to about 400 families with people living with disability as Christmas hampers.
The beneficiaries lauded the humanitarian gesture extended by the governor stating that due to harsh economic status, the majority of them were not privileged to share the happy moments with their families during Christmas. They added that from the hampers, they can now celebrate the new year as other citizens do across the country.
To ensure transparency, village elders and the nyumba kumi leaders were tasked to register the vulnerable families who were then given the new year gift hampers.
Speaking at the same function, Lukindo stated that the governor vouched for a strong partnership with all citizens including people living with disabilities and the vulnerables and that coming next year, there will be a feeding program for all the ECDE pupils.
“There is a program in which together with MCAs, the governor came up with, where all ECDE centers will get porridge flour so that our children can get something to eat while in school,” he said.
He added that to ensure students from the vulnerable families also get a chance to go to school and learn, the county government has set aside Ksh. 200 million to support the students.
“Together with MCAs, the governor has set aside Ksh. 200 million to ensure that students have got school fees and that they remain in school and learn,” he added.
