Following the upsurge of gender based violence, teen pregnancies and HIV infections among women and teenagers in Western Kenya, Health cabinet secretary Susan Nakhumicha has urged residents and leaders to collaborate in ending the three threats to Reproductive Health.
Speaking at Kiwanja wa ndege in Bungoma County, Nakhumicha said statistics are worrying despite the efforts being made.
Tremendous strides have been made but we want it to get to zero within a short time
she said.
She has urged elected leaders and women leaders to join hands with the communities so that the threats can be dealt with citing that they early pregnancy, HIV and GBV are causing havoc to the future of many young people.
She was speaking during the launch of Community Health Promoters Government Project where the CHPs will now be used to link communities to health facilities.
The community health promoters are going to be our foot soldiers in handling health and sanitation across the country, they will help us to decongest facilities since most of the diseases, screening and referrals will be done by them
she said
She says CHPs will be equipped to both preventive and curative services as part of Kenya Kwanza Government’s plan to strengthen Primary Health Care.
During the launch, a memorandum of understanding was signed between National Government and County Government of Bungoma over remuneration and welfare of Community Health Promoters.
A pledge was also made to clear their pending dues of the last two months.
