Kenya Kenya Defence Force (KDF) soldiers on Thursday June 27, 2024 continued patrolling streets in Nairobi as police officers lobbed teargas to disperse protesters.
At some point, defiant youth surrounded KDF vehicles as they continued to chant, ‘Ruto must go.’ The protesters cheered at the soldiers, while shouting that they were peaceful.
In a video circulating online, some excited protesters can be seen cheering as they escorted the soldiers who were on patrol vehicles.
Some armoured KDF vehicles were seen making their way through Tom Mboya Street, Moi Avenue, Kenyatta Avenue and other major streets in Nairobi’s CBD.
At the same time, anti-riot police officers continued dispersing the protesters, who kept on regrouping as they chanted anti-Ruto slogans.
This was after Defence cabinet secretary Aden Duale on Tuesday gazetted the KDF deployment in Nairobi and other parts of the country to help in dealing with anti-Finance Bill protests.
In addition, the National Assembly on Wednesday approved the deployment of KDF soldiers at a time when they had already started patrolling parts of the capital city.
Meanwhile, the Law Society of Kenya had filed a petition in court challenging the deployment of the soldiers.
