Kenya Wildlife Service Officially Launches KWS Strategic Plan 2024-2028

Today, Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) officially launched its Strategic Plan 2024-2028 at the iconic Ivory Burning Site in Nairobi National Park. The event, which underscores the government’s commitment to wildlife conservation, was presided over by Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary Hon. Rebecca Miano, and attended by dignitaries including; Principal Secretary Silvia Museiya (Wildlife), Principal Secretary John Ololtuaa (Tourism), Chairman of the Board of Trustees Lt. Gen. (Rtd) Walter Koipaton Raria, and Director General Dr. Erustus Kanga.

This strategic plan is the result of extensive consultations with various stakeholders in wildlife conservation, ensuring that it reflects a collective vision for the future. In her opening remarks, CS Miano described the plan as a “roadmap designed to transform wildlife conservation in Kenya

” highlighting its alignment with the Bottom-up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA). “This plan is a testament to our dedication and a collaborative effort that prioritizes community engagement and sustainable practices,” she stated.

Principal Secretary Museiya reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting KWS in achieving the ambitious goals outlined in the plan.

“The State Department for Wildlife stands ready to provide the leadership, policy support, and resources necessary to realize our aspirations,” she noted, emphasizing the importance of professionalism, accountability, and resilience among all stakeholders.

Lt. Gen. (Rtd) Walter Raria Koipaton, Chairman of the KWS Board of Trustees, expressed pride in the collaborative nature of the plan’s development. He stated,

“This plan aligns with KWS’s mission to conserve Kenya’s wildlife heritage for the well-being of both nature and people.” He called on all KWS personnel to diligently implement the strategy, assuring them of the Board’s unwavering support.

In closing, Dr. Erustus Kanga highlighted the significance of the Strategic Plan as more than just a roadmap;

“It is bold commitment to securing the future of Kenya’s wildlife and empowering our communities.” He emphasized that the success of this initiative will require collective action and dedication from all stakeholders involved.
