Preparations ahead of Monday’s national tree planting exercise are complete, the government has said while calling on Kenyans to actively participate in the process.
The exercise which will be presided over by President William Ruto at Kiu Wetlands in Makindu, Makueni county,has seen the government mobilizing the provision of seedlings across the counties with the process of distributing them to various places underway in an exercise coordinated by the national government administration officials and other partners.
Earlier this week, the government through a gazette notice declared November 13 as the national tree growing day, where the public is expected to engage in tree growing countrywide.The exercise is part of Kenya’s landscape and ecosystem restoration programme, aimed towards growing 15 billion trees by 2032.
In a joint statement to newsrooms,Interior principal secretary Raymond Omollo and his forestry counterpart Githonga Mugambi said besides the scheduled activities in particular areas at the counties, they have also instructed chiefs in all the 47 counties to take the lead in the tree planting efforts.
Further ,Omollo has called upon kenyans to actively participate in nurturing the planted trees and taking ownership of the national day to ensure long-term benefits for our environment.
Members of the public have been encouraged to visit their nearest chief’s office to acquire the tree seedlings with everyone expected to plant atleast 2 seedlings to hit the target of the day.
