In the picturesque hills of Wundanyi, Kenya, a powerful story of transformation unfolds. Roots of Hope follows the inspiring journey of a group of women whose collective efforts in combating climate change have breathed new life into their community, restoring both the environment and their economic stability.
The journey began in 2018 when local leader Danson Mwashako launched the Mti Mtoto Initiative, a visionary program aimed at combating deforestation and soil erosion. Supported by the Danson Mwashako Foundation, the initiative empowered women by gifting them tree seedlings with each new birth, fostering environmental stewardship and promoting sustainable livelihoods.
From a simple idea to a flourishing movement, the program introduced macadamia and Hass avocado seedlings, further enhancing food security and resilience. With each tree planted, the women of Wundanyi not only healed the land but cultivated a deep sense of pride and unity. In just a few short years, they have planted over 35,000 trees, restoring their environment and sowing the seeds of hope.
Roots of Hope highlights the profound impact of community-driven change, showing how the convergence of women’s leadership, cultural heritage, and innovative solutions can restore harmony between people and nature. A heartfelt tribute to the strength of the human spirit, this documentary celebrates the pivotal role women play in environmental conservation and the power of collective action to shape a brighter, sustainable future.
