In a landmark step towards industrialization, Taita Taveta County is set to host the region’s first steel manufacturing plant. The upcoming groundbreaking ceremony for the Devki Steel Mills, slated for December 3, 2024, will be officiated by His Excellency President William Samoei Ruto. A pre-visit to the site, led by Cabinet Secretary for Investment, Trade, and Industry Hon. Salim Mvurya, marked a significant milestone in the county’s economic journey.
Speaking during the inspection, Hon. Salim Mvurya highlighted the transformative potential of the steel plant. “This project is more than just a manufacturing facility—it is a catalyst for economic growth, job creation, and industrial development in Taita Taveta County. The collaboration between the County and National Governments demonstrates what we can achieve when we work together for the people.”
The steel plant, a venture by the Devki Group of Companies, is expected to redefine the economic landscape of the region. It promises over 2,000 direct jobs and countless indirect opportunities while stimulating local businesses and attracting additional investments. Chairman Narendra Raval, popularly known as “Guru,” expressed his commitment to empowering local communities through the project.
Governor Andrew Mwadime echoed the importance of this initiative for the county. “The establishment of Devki Steel Mills is a dream come true for our people. It will not only create jobs but also spur growth in sectors such as transport, hospitality, and retail. This is the beginning of a new chapter for Taita Taveta as an industrial hub in Kenya.”

The pre-visit saw attendance from several high-ranking officials, including County Commissioner Madam Josephine Onunga, Deputy Governor Christine Kilalo, Taveta MP Wakili Bwire, Hon. Danson Mwashako, Hon. Abdi Chome, and other county leaders. Their presence reflected the united approach of both the County and National Governments in driving the region’s development agenda.
